St Albans is so LUCKY to have this pub, with great staff and fantastic food this has been one of the best highlights of my trip to England in recent times.I discovered this pub by pure chance as it was recommended by another place that had stopped serving food. It was bitterly cold the day we were in St Albans and to step into a lovely, warm and cosy place was so delightful. One of the reasons we decided to stay was the large roaring fire.Special thanks to Catherine who served us our food and really did a fantastic job. She was managing so many tables and always remained so smiley and friendly, my wife and I were so impressed.I have read that some people think the portions are small. This I can confirm based on our experience to be NOT true. I opted for the, "Trio of Meats" and my wife had the, "Roast Butternut Squash Wellington". They both tasted AMAZING.Please, please visit this place, as I have said St Albans is so lucky to have such a great venue on their doorsteps.
Great location if youre looking for a quiet drink and people watching at the north end of St Albans city centre.Great selection of beers. The staff are generally really friendly but, for some reason, there appears to be a high turnover. Food in the restaurant is to a high standard and a restricted selection is available in the bar.For me, this pub/restaurant often goes from great to average to great again - I guess, because of the high staff turnover. It has the potential to be consistently great if the owners can hold on to great staff.
This pub has maintained a very high level of food and service since iv'e been going there (about 4 years). Well worth a visit.
A veritable institution.. Interesting regulars.. great boozer.
Really like this place for food - havent used it much on the pub side. Their Sunday roast is generally top notch and most of the staff are friendly and welcoming (the two guys in the restaurant are great... some of the ladies could be reminded to smile). They are also one of the few places that serve their roast into the evening which suits us perfectly.
